Paris, Bellizard, Barthès, Dufour et Lowell, éditeurs, 1835-1836. 2 grands volumes in-8, demi-chagrin à petits coins, dos richement décorés, tête dorée,266 pp-[2] [table] et 290 pp-[2] (table des matières). Même décor sur le dos mais un tome est insolé. (plus clair). Un premier volume est paru en 1834, description de Madras et de ses environs. Ces deux volumes, 1835, 1836, sont la suite en première édition française adaptée de l'Oriental annual du Révérend J. H. Caunter par P. J. Auguste Urbain et sont respectivement consacrés à Calcutta et à Bombay. Chaque volume comprend 22 planches gravées sur acier (dont frontispice). Peintre, dessinateur et aquarelliste, William Daniell partit pour les Indes en 1784 d'où il rapporta de nombreux dessins et esquisses. Quelques rousseurs sans gravité.

The beautiful plates depict views, sacred and famous buildings and sites, exotic animals including wild beasts fights and tiger hunt, etc. William Daniell travelled in India with his uncle Thomas Daniell for eight years and they produced a number of highly desirable aquatint illustrated works of the country including the renowned "Oriental Scenery" (1794). This volume is included in a series of seven volumes issued between 1834 and 1840.

In the publisher's original full embossed morocco binding with gilt detail. Bound by F. Westley. With a beautiful frontispiece, an engraved title page and twenty full page plates by William Daniell. Collated complete. Daniell was an English landscape painter, best known for his work in aquatint. During his artistic career, he travelled extensively around India, painting the people and scenery. A fascinating work regarding the culture of India. Written from the personal accounts of Rev. John Hobart Caunter. Caunter was an English cleric and writer who served as a cadet for the East India Company. He published numerous works relating to India and Biblical studies. 'The Oriental Annual' series concerned the different areas of India and was published in seven volumes. With an advertisement for the work to the front of the book, alongside four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. With the previous owner's neat ink signature to the front free endpaper. In the original full morocco binding. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities. Small crack to the upper rear joint. Light marks to the boards. Rear hinge is loosening. Light marks to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Binders label to the front paste-down. Previous owner's ink signature to the front free endpaper. Internally, binding strained between the frontispiece and engraved title page, but still firm. Pages age-toned to the edges. Spotting to the plates.
